How to get rid of a mattress in Los Angeles

For most City of Los Angeles residents, the cheapest option is free: LA Sanitation will pick up a mattress at the curb at no extra charge. Book it at least one business day before your trash day. If that doesn't work for you, there are free mattress drop-off sites across LA County, and California law requires retailers to take your old mattress back for free when they deliver a new one.

Last checked: Thursday, Nov 5, 2026 (Pacific). Fees and hours change, so confirm before you go.

LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN): Bulky Item Pickup

  • Cost: LASAN calls it "an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge to you."
  • Accepted: mattresses and box springs (both are listed by name), plus furniture, toilets and sinks, rolled carpet, and e-waste such as TVs.
  • Not accepted: construction materials, auto parts and oil, paint and chemicals, commercial appliances, fluorescent lights, and cardboard (unless you have a scheduled Move In/Move Out service).
  • When: items are collected on your regular trash day. Book at least one business day before your normal collection day.
  • How to book: the online Service Request Form, the MyLA311 app, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.
  • Tip from LASAN: have an itemized list ready, e.g. "one mattress, one box spring," so they send the right truck.

Step by step: booking a curbside mattress pickup

  1. Confirm you get City of LA trash service (LASAN black, blue and green bins). If you are in an unincorporated county area or another city (Culver City, Glendale, Burbank, etc.), your hauler is different. See section 4.
  2. Look up your regular trash day.
  3. At least one business day before that day, submit the request online, in MyLA311, or by calling 1-800-773-2489. List every item.
  4. Put the mattress at the curb for your scheduled collection day. Don't block cars, mailboxes or the sidewalk.
  5. Renters in larger apartment buildings: ask your property manager first. Some buildings arrange bulky pickup through a private hauler.

4. Not in the City of LA?

In unincorporated LA County and county franchise areas, LA County Public Works says most residential trash haulers offer free bulky item pickup (mattresses included). Call the number on your trash bill or your bin to request a "bulky item pickup." Other cities (Culver City, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and others) run their own programs. HaulGuide will add separate guides for them.

5. Paid in-home pickup (haulers)

Paid pickup makes sense if you can't get the mattress to the curb, or you need it gone sooner than your next trash day. Get the full price in writing before the crew arrives.

LoadUp (national, booked online)

Published starting prices: in-home mattress pickup from $85, curbside from $80, same-day (booked before 2 PM) from $95, extra items from +$15. LoadUp says the final price is confirmed by ZIP code and pickup conditions. It doesn't take mattresses with undisclosed bed bugs or wet mattresses.

1-800-GOT-JUNK? and other franchise haulers

We couldn't find a current published price for a single mattress in Los Angeles. Quotes are given per job. Price range unconfirmed. As a reported quote only: a Seattle Reddit user in January 2026 said 1-800-Got-Junk quoted $500–$750 for a pile of junk, then offered $250 when the user pushed back (r/SeattleWA thread). That was a different city and a larger load, so it is not a mattress price.

Local independent haulers

Small local haulers often price by phone or text from a photo. We don't list individual LA haulers yet. Before you book anyone, ask for the total price in writing, whether disposal fees are included, and whether they take mattresses to a recycler.

6. Should you rent a dumpster for a mattress?

Usually not. For one or two mattresses, the free options above are cheaper. If you are renting a dumpster for a bigger cleanout anyway, read the weight-limit and overage terms closely. Public BBB complaints describe consumers being billed weight charges after pickup, for example on the BBB complaints page for one dumpster broker. Ask for the included tonnage and the per-ton overage price in writing.

Don't dump it

Leaving a mattress on the sidewalk without a scheduled pickup counts as illegal dumping. In the City of LA, the free curbside pickup does the same job legally.
